THIS GUIDE IS A WORK IN PROGRESS

Overview

My motivation: Don’t you hate it when you want to watch a show or movie, only to find it’s not available, as if it’s been taken off of your favorite streaming platform and/or you have to subscribe to a new subscription service just to watch what you want?

Introduction to Jellyfin

Jellyfin is a free and open-source media server that helps organize and play all our movies, shows, and music on different devices like phones, tablets, computers, and TVs. It’s essentially our personal Netflix.

Key Features and Benefits

Here are some cool things you can do with Jellyfin:

  • Watch movies and TV shows from anywhere:

You can stream your favorite videos and music to any device that’s connected to your Jellyfin server.

  • Organize your library:

Jellyfin helps keep my media organized, adding pictures and descriptions to make it easier to find what you want to watch/listen to.

  • Use it on different devices:

You can access Jellyfin from different devices like your computer, phone, tablet, or even your TV!

  • Makes sure it works on any device:

Jellyfin can change the way videos are shown to match your device. So even if your device doesn’t play a certain video format, Jellyfin will change it so you can still watch it.

  • Share with friends and family:

You can share your media library with your friends and family. They can watch the same things you have, and you can even watch together at the same time, even if you’re far apart!

Ready to get started? Follow the Quick-Start guide.

If you have any questions or need further assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out to me via text or contact info provided in the documentation.

Happy streaming with Jellyfin!

2.1 - Quick-Start Guide

This page provides step-by-step instructions on how to quickly get started with your Jellyfin server.

For the super-impatient:

Go to https://media.menning.cloud and log in.

General Start

Download Jellyfin Media Player

As good as it works in the web browser, there’s a massive improvement if you use their Jellyfin Media Player and other native apps, as it is able to make use of your own device’s native encoding/decoding processer.

For other specific suggestions, check out this guide.

Change Password

You don’t really have to, but it’s good practice. Follow the quick guide here.

Change Library Order

Libraries are alphabetical by default, but it leads to the libraries y’all are probably most interested in (Movies and Shows) near the end.

Log in > Top-right Profile Dropdown > Home > Library Order

Default Jellyfin Library

Adjust to your liking.

Request Movies and Shows

Are there shows or movies you wish the server had? Make a request, even if the movie/show isn’t out yet!

Check out the page on Jellyseer

Watching Movies and Shows

I have a normal Movies folder of 1080p movies.

I have a separate movie’s folder of high quality 4k versions. Not all movies will have 4k versions.

If movie starts studdering, might be an indication that my hard drives or internet isn’t fast enough. Couple options:

Transcode lower (new GPU handles transcodes really well)

Download and play locally (takes time to download, and 4k movie files are very large)

2.1.1 - Changing Password

This page explains how users can change their password for the Jellyfin server.

How to change your password

To change your password in Jellyfin, follow these steps:

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to https://media.menning.cloud.
  2. Log in with your current username and password.
  3. Once logged in, click on your username located at the top right corner of the screen.
  4. From the dropdown menu, select “Profile”
  5. Insert your current password under Current password, then your new password under New password and New password confirm then hit Save right underneath.
  6. If you do not remember your current password, you can select Reset Password and select through the prompt.

Your password will now be updated, and you can use the new password to log into your Jellyfin server in the future.

If you encounter any issues or have trouble changing your password, don’t hesitate to reach out to Kenei for further assistance.

4 - Requesting Movies and Shows

Netflix won’t let you do this

Why Request?

Make this Jellyfin kind of like your own. Plus you’ll introduce me to good shows and movies… I trust you taste.

How do I Submit a Request?

Through Jellyseer.

Philosophy

I won’t keep every TV Show or Movie, especially if I start running out of space. If I’d buy the movie on Blu-Ray, I’ll probalby try to keep it on the server.

How are you getting the media?

AutoMagically. And sometimes it fails. If it does, let me know and I’ll take a closer look.

How soon can you get a movie/show after it’s been released?

Usually as soon as Blu-Rays are available and/or they start streaming it. If it’s theater’s only, be patient. You can still request it and once it’s available, it’ll automagically download.

4.1 - Jellyseer

What is this?

Jellyseerr is a free and open source software application for managing requests for your media library.

Sure. https://jellyseer.menning.cloud

Username and Password is the exact same as your current Jellyfin counterpart.

Wow! Did you make this?

No, someone else who’s smarter than me did. I’m just running a private instance of it on my server connected to my Jellyfin.

Wait, why is it spelled differently?

Not sure why the original program is spelled with two “r”’s at the end, but I can call it whatever I want.
